“Photo: Cake decorating is serious business, but there’s always time to taste the frosting. Grace Portelance, 5, left, and her sister Allison, 3, of Sunlight Beach, were among the competitors in the Cake Decorating Contest at the Fiddle Faddle Farm on Thursday, opening day of the Island County Fair. There are more contests today and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Winners get prizes, and everyone gets to keep the cake.Joan Soltys/staff photoIt’s never a surprise: Kids always have a great time at the Island County Fair. Whether it’s a trip through the animal barns to visit the goats, sheep, pigs, chickens and guinea pigs, a ride on a pretty pony, or an exciting excursion in a flying dragon, there isn’t time for a moment of boredom at the fair. This year there are a host of activities for kids: contests for cake decorating, pie eating, and bubble gum blowing; the balloon creations of Cosmo the Balloon Wizard; Deano the Clown, puppet shows, pirates and parrots. For those a bit more adventurous, the daily exhibit of Brad’s Reptiles in the Pole Building can give youngsters (or their elders) a thrill or a chill. If that’s not your favorite kind of creature contact, the Fiddle Faddle Farm’s baby animal barn is a warm and friendly place to pet the fur on a soft rabbit or hold an infant chick. “
