Four children injured in crash

A driver’s failure to stop at a stop sign resulted in a two-car collision Friday afternoon on Cultus Bay Road on South Whidbey. Four children were sent to WhidbeyHealth Medical Center with minor injuries, according to South Whidbey Fire and Rescue officials.

Around noon, 36-year-old Joshua McGaffey of Seattle was driving west on Deer Lake Road in a Ford Edge SUV. McGaffey travelled through the intersection at full speed and broadsided a pickup that had been traveling north on Cultus Bay Road. Five occupants were in the pickup, according to South Whidbey Fire/EMS Deputy Chief Jon Beck.

McGaffey was issued a citation for failure to stop, according to an Island County Sheriff’s Office. He was not injured.

The Ford was found on Log Cabin Road on its top and the pickup had spun around and landed on its side, Beck said. All of the people involved were outside of their vehicles when first responders arrived.

The four children were transported to the hospital and the adult driver of the pickup went separately, he said.
