As a fund-raising strategy, Harden’s promise to go bald may have no equal.I said that to someone in the store and they gave me $5 right there, she said.Harden, who recently started working at the Island Athletic Club, signed up to take part in South Whidbey’s Relay for Life for the first time this year. The relay raises funds for cancer research, and is supported by teams of walkers and runners from dozens of South Whidbey businesses and organizations. Harden said she decided to join the IAC relay team after her 34-year-old daughter, Diana Brock, died of colon cancer on March 27.Then one night earlier this spring, Harden and her husband were watching a Mariners baseball game when she heard an advertisement for Buhner Buzz Night. She decided that shaving her head would be a great way to draw attention to the fund raising she was doing for the relay. Her husband did not think the idea was so great when he first heard it, Harden said, but has since promised to shave his head if she shaves hers. Harden’s mother-in-law is the only relation who is still in the no shave camp.Harden said she will shave her head again the day of the relay if she is able to raise more than $400.Those who do not get a chance to run into Harden on the street or in the store and who wish to contribute to her de-locking can send donations to her at 1530 E.
