Gay 90s again hosts families for Santa breakfast

"Family and friends of the late Donna White, co-owner of the Gay 90s Restaurant in Freeland and originator of the Santa Breakfast there, continued her tradition this year by inviting families from Readiness to Learn to the special event. "

“Members of the Readiness to Learn team were among those at the Gay 90’s Santa Breakfast in Freeland on Dec. 9: (from left) Sharon Bell and Gail La Vassar, family advocates; Mickie Nowlin, program coordinator; Daryl Ball, Santa’s helper; and Vickie Lash, community coordinator.Six years ago, the late Donna White, co-owner of the Gay 90’s Restaurant in Freeland, started what has become a tradition there during the holidays. It’s the free Santa Breakfast, served every Christmas to families in the Readiness To Learn Program. This year, honoring White’s commitment to the community, her family and friends served up the breakfast once again, continuing the project she conceived in the spirit of the holidays. White’s Santa Breakfast is now being organized by her daughter Kathy White-Blackburn with support from Donna’s family members: husband Harold White, daughters Susie Asplund and Diane Furman and their husbands Mark and Rick, and grandchildren Steven, Ryan, Megan and Blake. Also supporting Kathy’s efforts are Donna’s friends Kay Stanley, Anne Muniz, Tina Jensen, and Kathy McLaughlin. After all the families are served a delicious breakfast, Santa joins the celebration, McLaughlin said. He listens to all the dreams and wishes from children of all ages, from infants to those who are never too old and still believe. White, who died of cancer in 1997, was always looking for new ways to serve her community, McLaughlin said. Her list of volunteering was neverending, McLaughlin said. White had been an active Soroptimist, where she was a leader in the Monster Manor project. She was a Rotarian, and a member of the Freeland Chamber of Commerce. Donna believed there was a need for a no-cost Santa Breakfast in our community, McLaughin said. As a co-owner of Gay 90’s she asked her friends and family to join her in her efforts. She then extended an invitation to the families that participate in the Readiness To Learn Program.RTL is a partnership among parents, school and community, working together to provide, supports to will help children and youth succeed in school. Approximately 30 families with children up to age 18 can be enrolled in the voluntary program.Donna’s Breakfast at Gay 90’s is a wonderful community project that began with one woman’s will to serve her community, McLaughlin said. “
