“The South Whidbey Giants fastpitch team has won the District 11 Major Little League championship for the 11- to 12-year-old girls division.The championship game was played July 14 in Burlington against Sedro-Woolley. Both teams entered the game with only one loss in tournament play. But the showdown wasn’t even close — South Whidbey won 10-3 behind the pitching of Caitie Newman who threw to catcher Robyn Vandervort.The victory sent the South Whidbey squad to the state tournament which is in progress this weekend.The girls playing for the Giants went undefeated in Whidbey Island League play during the year, which began in April and ends with the state tournament. They and the other South Whidbey team combined forces for the all-star round of tournament play. Team members are Jenna Dunsmore, Katherine East, Lacey Greene, Sara Hicks, Silver Keck, Caitlyn Kalal, Marcella Litwiller, Anna Miller, Caitie Newman, Amellia Pernell and Robyn Vandervort.In district play, the South Whidbey girls, managed by Lance Dunsmore and coached by Jim Adsley, won their opener 13-3 against South Skagit. They beat Burlington 18-7, then nipped the North Whidbey All Stars 6-5. A 6-7 loss to Sedro-Woolley sent those two teams into the title match.Due to vacation schedules, the South Whidbey Giants opened the district tournament with only nine players, which grew to 11 later on. These young ladies truly learned the value of collective perseverance and teamwork, said coach Adsley. Five of the players spent the early part of this week at baseball clinics, but the team was back together for the state tournament opener.”
