“For the past 16 years, Setter Ridge Kennel in Clinton has won various awards at the English Setter National Specialty dog show. This year, the next generation of handlers earned major honors.Micah Johnson, age 9, showed her dog Zabri (American Canadian Champion Bluprint’s Set’r Ridge’s Zabri Junior Hunter), a veteran at the age of 11. Zabri and Micah won the Veteran Sweepstakes over Micah’s mother, Melissa Newman, showing Zabri’s son, Kid (American Canadian Champion Set’r Ridge Lookin At You Kid Junior Hunter), who was the top ranked English Setter in the United States in 1995 and 1996. Although Zabri herself was the top ranked English Setter in the U.S. in 1994, she has been retired for many years.Micah has shown at only two dog shows prior to the June 2000 National in San Diego, held at the Lawrence Welk Resort on their elite golf course. Micah also won an Award of Merit with Zabri, again placing above her mother, who had won the last Award of Merit with Kid. There were setters from many countries in attendance, including dogs from Japan, Canada and Mexico. In an entry field of more than 200 dogs, seven awards were given to the top winners. Of these awards, Set’r Ridge produced Winners Bitch, Best of Winners and Best of Opposite Sex — Set’r Ridge’s Photo Copy. Usually Best of Opposite Sex is won by a champion, so this was a feat in itself.Reserve Winners Dog and Reserve Winners Bitch were out of Ch Set’r Ridge Rich Kid (a Kid daughter). Best Stud dog was Ch Set’r Ridge’s Select Gold, sire of Winners Bitch and Winners Dog. There were five Awards of Merit given, of which Zabri and Kid won two, from the Veteran Bitch class and Field Trial Dog class. Best In Futurity was Set’r Ridge’s Special Affects. First in the Open Bitch class was Set’r Ridge’s Impressive; first in the 9 to 12 class was Set’r Ridge’s Special Affects; first in the American Bred class was Set’r Ridge’s Arden’s Spice Girl; first in the Bred By class and Best Bred By in Show was Set’r Ridge’s Photo Copy.”
