Members of Girl Scout Troop 50369 completed their Bronze Award by creating and installing a new sign for whale watching in Langley.

The Bronze Award, the highest award in Junior Girl Scouting, was earned with the creation and installation of a sign that provides guidance on when to ring the whale bell at Thomas Hladky Memorial Park.

The scouts chose this as their community service project after exploring the sculptures in Langley as part of their Brownie Girl Scout badge work. They saw the whale bell and rang it, without knowing what it was for. One resident responded and ran out to see the whales. Unfortunately, none were to be found.

Based on that incident, the girls decided to design a sign to identify the bell’s use.

Tim Leonard, artist and owner of Heavy Metal Works in Clinton, fabricated the metal sign based on a design file created by Mike Deilke of Langley.

The sign reads “Spy a whale, ring the bell.”

The girls worked with the Langley Parks and Open Space Commission, the Langley Design Review Board and the Langley Community Club to execute this project.

At the installation ceremony on Saturday, Langley Mayor Fred McCarthy presented the girls with their award medals and praised them for their contribution to the Langley community.
