After four players scored in double digits on the way to an 85-40 win in their season opener Friday night, South Whidbey High School girls basketball coach Sam Lee found it pretty easy to speak for his team.

“We’re all pumped,” he said.

Matched against Silverdale’s Klahowya High School team, the Falcons were clearly more skilled as they poured on the points. Though they came out of the first quarter with only a five-point lead, the Falcons flew ahead in the second quarter by outscoring Klahowya 25-13.

Senior Hilary Wick was a major part of the offensive and defensive onslaught. She put away 24 points on her way to a triple double. Combined with Bronwyn Russell’s 14 points and nine steals, the two players could have almost won the game on their own.

Overall, the Falcons amassed 42 steals and managed 36 for 83 field goal shooting. Nonetheless, Lee said the Falcon girls still need to work on their ball handling skills – especially if they want to win games against the tougher competition they will start to face at Friday’s home opener against the Sultan Turks.

He said the team can do a lot between now and then.

“I’m pretty encouraged,” he said.

In junior varsity action, the Falcons were even more impressive. Led by junior Justine Connelly and freshman Mary McCune, the JV team beat Klahowya 74-16 in Friday’s early game.
