“Since 1997, the Langley Middle School PTSA has provided monetary awards for a variety of special projects at the school, through funds raised at the annual golf tournament held each spring. This year the event is scheduled for Saturday, May19 at Holmes Harbor Golf Course in Freeland. Scratch golfers and duffers alike are invited to the fourth annual tournament. Last year’s events raised $2,000 for grants, which were awarded in the areas of math, music, physical education, science and technology. Teachers, para-educators and library personnel submit grant requests and a committee awards the money based on the number of students and classes that will benefit from the request, as well as what type of learning the request will fulfill. Last year, Jan Mahaffey and Mike Cramer were granted $1,004 for new graphing calculators needed for algebra classes, and six robotic Droid Developer kits were purchased for $375 at the request of Rachel Kizer. They will rotate among three classes and be used by the Girls in Technology Program to build programming robots with real job applications.Librarian Charles Snelling was awarded $260 to purchase two copies of Macintosh OSX, a Unix-based industrial strength operating system which, Snelling said in his request, will come in handy for the three Web sites we host now and those we envision for the future. The software will be installed on two Power Macs already in the library media center.In the realm of science and physical education, $250 was granted to Erik Jokinen for five pairs of adjustable in-line skates, helmets and protective gear for use as part of his unit in kinetic balance and coordination. The physical education department is involved in an ongoing effort to create individualized lifelong fitness activities for students, utilizing equipment to create a balance, coordination and kinetic activity center, Jokinen said.Science teacher Leslie Hoelting requested money for displacement cylinders used for laboratory experiments in her rocks and minerals lab.And a grant of $41 was given to help the eighth grade jazz band under Chris Harshman’s direction travel to Ellensburg for the high school band invitational at Central Washington University in March. The annual golf tournament is the only fund-raising effort sponsored by the LMS/PTSA, and the amount of money raised is directly related to the number and size of grants that can be awarded.For more information about participating call Barb Guetlin at 331-2605. “
