Growlers to conduct fly over in Hansville area

Four EA-18G Growlers will conduct a flyover for Lt. j.g. John “Mike” Wolf on June 26, around 2:15 p.m.

Four EA-18G Growlers from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island will conduct a flyover at a memorial service for Lt. j.g. John “Mike” Wolf over Hansville, Wash., area on Saturday, June 26, at approximately 2:15 p.m.

Wolf, who passed away March 26, 2021, was a World War II ace assigned to Fighter Squadron 2, or VF-2, flying the Grumman F6F Hellcat aboard the USS Hornet. He was credited with shooting down seven enemy aircraft during the war with two other “probables.”

According to his obituary in the Kitsap Sun, Wolf was born on February 4, 1921 in Ajo, Ariz. and grew up in Long Beach, Calif. where he attended Long Beach City College. He enlisted in the Navy from there after Pearl Harbor, and joined the newly formed VF-2 in 1943 upon earning his wings.

Wolf flew off the USS Enterprise and the USS Hornet during the war. Wolf lived in Long Beach after the war, then Ranchita, Calif. when he retired. Wolf moved with his wife Carol to Hansville, in 2002.

The aircraft will approach Hansville at about 1,000 feet above ground level from the northwest heading southeast.
