An estimated 300 Hearts & Hammers volunteers are expected to show up for the organization’s annual work day next month, tackling projects on over 30 South Whidbey homes.

The work day is the group’s largest yearly event, bringing together a small army of workers to help struggling homeowners make needed repairs to their homes.

This year’s work day begins 7:45 a.m. Saturday, May 2 at South Whidbey High School, 5675 Maxwelton Road. Teams will meet with house captains and share breakfast snacks before heading out.

Hearts & Hammers T-shirts, hats and sweatshirts will be available for purchase. A photo will also be taken of the entire group before they disperse to work sites spanning Clinton to Greenbank.

Volunteers are reminded to bring safety equipment such as gloves, goggles, protective shoes, a lunch and any tools the house captains have requested. Young workers from ages 12 to 15 are welcome to work with their parents with a medical release form; 16 to 17-year-olds can work without parents but must have a medical release and parental permission form. Go to www.heartsandhammers.com to obtain a form to bring to your house captain.

At the end of the day, homeowners and volunteers will reconvene at the high school for a meal and a wrap up of the accomplishments of the day, including music and a slide show. Dinner is a Mediterranean meal prepared under the direction of Useless Bay Coffee Company chef Des Rock and his crew.

Donations are still needed and appreciated, and can be made online on the organization’s website.
