“Whidbey Island Hospital District can start ordering nails and hammers. A bond issue to expand the facilities breezed to victory in yesterday’s election.With most Island County votes counted at midnight, the $5.135 million hospital bond proposal had received 78 percent of the vote: 6,313 yes and only 2,015 no. Sixty percent approval was needed.District 1 County Commissioner Mike Shelton, R-Langley, was unopposed in his party and received 2,470 votes. Democrat William Rowlands tallied 1,480. Democrat Tom Fisher ran a write-in campaign, but garnered only about 800 votes. That’s real unofficial, said Auditor Suzanne Sinclair, noting the time-consuming nature of counting write-ins.For Island County Commissioner from Oak Harbor, incumbent Republican Mac McDowell won a close race with his opponent, Republican Marv Koorn, with a 1,277 to 1,016 vote advantage. On the Democratic side, the unopposed Lynne Wilcox received 845 votes.The following votes for 10th District and state races were as of 11 p.m., before the Oak Harbor ballots were counted. There was a delay in getting the ballots to the Auditor’s Office, said Sinclair.In the 10th Legislative District races, Barry Sehlin, R-Oak Harbor, won an intraparty contest with Marysville Republican Hugh Fleet. The count at 11 p.m., before the Oak Harbor votes were tallied, was 2,892 for Sehlin and 328 for Fleet. The district also includes portions of Skagit and Snohomish counties. Sehlin will face Democrat Dave Anderson in the general election. Anderson was unopposed and had 3,568 votes at press time. For the other House seat, incumbent Republican Kelly Barlean had 3,568 votes to 2,561 for Democrat John McCoy.For state Senate from the 10th District, incumbent Democrat Mary Margaret Haugen had 3,975 votes, compared to 2,920 for Republican Norma Smith. Again, these were partial Island County results.Island County voters also indicated their preference in major statewide races. For governor, Democrat Gary Locke received 4,210 votes to Republican John Carlson’s 2,613, and Republican Harold Hochstatter’s 341 votes.For U.S. Senate, Republican Slade Gorton has 3,155 votes to Democrat Maria Cantwell’s 2,705.
