Hundreds hunt for prize Easter eggs in annual event

The kids took off at a run on Easter Sunday at precisely 2 p.m. when the whistle blew to start the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club.

“Who cares about the money? The penny scramble was simply a grand place for Jamila Bojang, 2, to play in the straw. Some were dressed in Easter finery, from white shirt and tie to frilled dresses and straw hats. They ranged from ages 1 to 8, and they gathered Sunday with scarcely controlled eagerness for the annual giant Easter egg hunt at the Holmes Harbor Rod and Gun Club. The club’s Easter Bunny had covered the spacious grounds, scattering more than 1,000 brightly colored plastic eggs containing candy and treats, or cash and prizes. When the starting whistle blew, it was full speed ahead. The littlest searchers scrambled around a soft, grassy area for the prizes, while older ones ran down the hills of the shooting range to swoop down and scoop up the loot. It didn’t take long for the eggs to disappear from the ground, and then it was time for the kids to dive into piles of straw to search for some of the hundreds of pennies hidden inside. And while some of them took the business seriously and hunted with purpose, the youngest had the most fun just playing happily in the straw. “
