The Spring Gallery Walk – April in Paris – will feature selected objets d’art to browse, and assorted baked goods and other refreshments will be for sale at the Cafe des Artistes.The event takes place during National TV Turn-Off Week, and thus is not only a celebration of children’s art but an alternative to an evening in front of the television set.Art docent volunteers work through the year to involve children in an appreciation of the arts and to help foster their expression through art projects. Gallery night is an occasion at which the docents and their students present the results of those studies, gleaned from the works and techniques of masters from Rembrandt, Renoir, O’Keeffe and Utrillo, in addition to many others.The gymnasium of the school will be transformed by the accomplishments of our young, talented artists, said Barb Bennet, a school volunteer. So come, take a stroll through the ‘streets’ of the school gym and art docent galleries.This year’s Gallery Walk will again offer children’s artwork for sale, including the perennial favorites — mugs, mouse pads and magnets with the artwork emblazoned on them. What a fun way to enjoy or share your child’s talents with extended family members and friends, Bennett said. An extra mug or two, maybe a few magnets or a tote bag or T-shirt can be bought now and tucked away until Christmas to become a welcome treasure.All funds raised will go to further enhance the Art Docent Program, which is designed to stimulate children’s awareness of art at an early age, and to help them understand its processes through appreciation and participation. Each docent unit has been selected for a particular grade level to offer a progressive understanding of artists, their methods and their messages. Lessons on particular artists are presented monthly, with the docent guiding the class through a discussion and a follow-up art project.On South Whidbey, the Art Docent program has been in existence for six years, and now includes the three-dimensional glass art of a Northwest artist, purchased by a grant from the South Whidbey Schools Foundation.The enrichment program is sponsored by the South Whidbey Elementary PTA and the school district. “
