“Whidbey Islanders and visitors will be having fun this Memorial Day holiday weekend, but it probably won’t be fun in the sun.South Whidbey school children woke up Friday morning with good news and bad news. The good news was there was no school as the four-day weekend had begun; the bad news was the steady rain falling from the sky.According to the National Weather Service, rain won’t be a surprise any day during the holiday weekend, with showers possible today, Sunday and Monday. So whatever happens, it will probably be under cloudy skies.Nevertheless, people have been flocking to grocery and hardware stores to stock up on holiday picnic and barbecue supplies, even if celebrations will have to be held near cover.Memorial Day on Monday, most grocery and retail stores will be open, but banks, schools and government offices will be closed.Three patriotic celebrations are scheduled Monday for South Whidbey citizens to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country:* Langley Woodmen Cemetery, 10 a.m., dedication of the new flag pole with a ceremony including American Legion Post 141, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Daughters of the American Revolution, Langley Friends of the Cemetery, Boy Scouts, Naval Air Station Whidbey Color Guard, and student Jenny Westfall playing The Star Spangled Banner and Taps. Poppy Girl Ashley Gabelein will place the wreath.* Bayview Cemetery, 10:45 a.m., VFW members will march in and present their Memorial Day program, including the wreath laying by Ashley Gabelein.* Clinton Cemetery, 11 a.m., hosted by Boy Scout Troop 57 and the D.A.R. Speakers include Lt. Cmdr. John Ray Kniseley II, the Rev. Paul Benz, and Roy Simmons, who will read the names of honored veterans.All are welcome to a potluck gathering at the American Legion Hall in Bayview following the Memorial Day ceremonies.While military uniforms will be prevalent at the Memorial Day ceremonies, police uniforms will be a common sight on South Whidbey’s roads and highways. The State Patrol, Island County Sheriff’s Office and Langley Police Department will all be out in force to help assure a safe holiday weekend for everyone.”
