“South Whidbey’s JV fastpitch team entered last week’s game against the Lakewood Cougars with an exceptional 6 and 1 win-loss record and tied for first with the Cougars. The Cougars brought out their big guns by using their school’s top pitcher, a bullet thrower who is unable to play varsity because of eligibility problems. Undaunted, the Falcon girls opened the first inning with Ashleigh MacIntyre working the pitcher for a walk and Justine Connelly reaching base on an infield hit. Then with runners at second and third Carissa Moore lined one into right, scoring both runners.Lucy Dahmen took the mound for the Falcons and proceeded to mow down the Cougars with a combination of sizzling fastballs and a well-placed changeup that kept the hapless Cougars from digging in. She kept a perfect game going until the fourth when she issued a walk, but a strikeout and force at third kept her shutout intact. The Falcon defense was flawless with an impenetrable infield consisting of Beth Van Benschoten at third, Carissa Moore at short, Danielle Bailey holding down second and Malerie Litwiller doing the stretch at first. Behind the plate were the sure hands and rifle arm of Ashleigh MacIntyre. In the sixth Jessie Gabri opened with a walk, stole second and crossed the plate on a well placed single by Ashley MacIntyre. The Cougars found their bats as the game progressed but the outfielders let only one ball find the grass out there. Falcon outfielders are Mackensie Sommers, Jessie Gabri, Lisa Enell, Linsay Federline, Linda Klein, Abbey Ackley and Kim Julius, who snagged two flys in the seventh to retire the Cougars. When the dust had settled the Falcons emerged with a 5 to 1 win and now are firmly in first place in their conference with an enviable 7 and 1 record. Coach Jim Walker leads and inspires a daring and enthusiastic team that that not only plays flawless, heads-up baseball but would give the famed New York Yankee fans a run for their money with their spirited dugout chants. “
