Kids produce Salmon Adventure calendar

"South Whidbey Intermediate School kids working under the guidance of local artists produced the artwork for the Community Calendar, called Bugs, Birds and Beyond. Among the contributors is Bridget Scott, who created these grasshoppers. "

“Teacher Rene Neff, right, and her class at the Intermediate School helped produce this year’s Salmon Adventure calendar, now available at the school and at area businesses. After a two-year hiatus, the Maxwelton Salmon Adventure’s popular Community Calendar is back.Students at South Whidbey Intermediate School produced this year’s calendar, Bugs, Birds and Beyond at the Outdoor Classroom. Teacher Rene Neff describes the endeavor as a service learning project to raise funds for the education position at the Outdoor Classroom. These students love their visits to the Outdoor Classroom and produced this year’s calendar as their way of giving back for the wonderful experiences they have received there, Neff said. The school district’s Outdoor Classroom building is located alongside Maxwelton Creek, near the intersection of Maxwelton and French roads. The students created the artwork with the help of local visiting artists, including Jim Nelson, Noe Astorga, April Harrop, Celeste Mergens and Diane Kaufman. These artists gave their personal time to share their passion, techniques and approaches to the artwork, Neff said. The students had fun experimenting with various techniques as well as learning about the critters that inhabit the natural spaces of Whidbey Island. The final calendar product is impressive. With the help of volunteers, the calendar was completed to include important school dates and community events. The calendars are now on sale at South Whidbey Intermediate School and the following businesses: Mooonraker Books in Langley, Island Athletic Club in Freeland, Momentum Health Club at Ken’s Corner, the Smilin’ Dog Cafe at Bayview Corner, and the Admiralty Head Lighthouse in Coupeville.Single calendars are $9, multiple copies are $8 each.
