“Larry Kwarsick has sat in on his final Board of Commissioners regular staff meeting.Kwarsick, who has served in Island County government for the last 25 years, will officially retire as Director of Public Works at the end of October, but his regular duties have ended. He has held the position since July 1993.Among the projects planned or overseen by Kwarsick during his directorship were the building of family resource centers in each of the county’s three districts, the construction of the new Law & Justice Center and the current remodel of the county courthouse and annex.According to Laura Olson, manager of Public Works, Kwarsick was also the mastermind behind buying the Greenbank Farm and saving it. Olson credits Kwarsick with lots of institutional knowledge, calling him a very creative thinker as well as a good all around person.Said Olson, I’m just going to miss him a whole lot.Kwarsick’s successor, Bill Oakes, comes to Island County after 10 years of service in King County government. “
