Lack of skiers ends Ski Bus program

Hopes to resurrect the Ski Bus have been deflated indefinitely.

Despite a steady flow of snow to the mountains this winter, South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District officials announced the annual charter bus to the mountains has been cancelled for the third consecutive year. Program Coordinator Carrie Monforte said there were “not nearly enough riders” signed up as of a Dec. 15 registration deadline.

Cancellations in 2015 and 2016 resulted from a lack of a snow and registrants. This year’s Ski Bus was scheduled for six trips from Jan. 7 through Feb. 11.

Parks Director Doug Coutts said because of a lack of registrants over the past three years, the district will no longer offer the program.

“That’s strike three, so we’re out,” said Coutts at the district’s regular monthly meeting on Dec. 20. “It’s unfortunate, but there’s not the interest there to put the energy into organizing it.”

The program began in the mid-1990s and has served as a boon for the district during years with heavier snowfall.
