Langey accepting council resumes

Anyone living in Langley for at least a year may apply to be appointed as a city council member.

Anyone living in Langley for at least a year may apply to be appointed as a city council member.

The city posted the position Dec. 7, which will be become available in January when Councilwoman Robin Black’s resignation takes effect. Applicants will be interviewed in open session by the city council, including Black. Only four of the members will be allowed to vote on her successor; Black may not vote.

Applications are due Friday, Dec. 18. Interviews are planned for the regular council meeting Monday, Dec. 21.

“We have had people inquire about this because it was in the paper,” Mayor Fred McCarthy said.

Black ran unopposed for her first full term in November. She was previously appointed to fill out Margot Jerome’s term, which was vacated when her family moved to North Carolina shortly after Jerome took office.

During the election season, Black submitted her resignation after questions arose about the nature of having two elected officials come from the same home. Black is married to mayor-elect Tim Callison.

Despite finding no state law or city code prohibiting them from serving together at Langley City Hall, Black offered her resignation contingent upon Callison winning the November election.

The council intends to have someone selected by the first meeting of the new year, Monday, Jan. 4. First, Black will be sworn in as the officially elected councilwoman, then she will immediately step down, and her replacement sworn in.
