If all goes smoothly, the Port of South Whidbey’s planned renovations of the Langley Marina boat launch could begin as soon as next month.

The port received a building permit from Langley earlier this week and district officials are in the process of getting the project ready to send out to bid. According to Ed Field, manager of the port, the plans could be available for review by contractors at the builder’s exchange in Everett by this weekend.

“We hoping to issue the bid documents as early as Friday,” said Field on Wednesday.

The project calls for the installation of two 25-foot floats, a gangway and a 12-foot concrete pedestrian ramp at the boat launch. Permits for the work are set to expire Dec. 29, Field said.

The improvements were initially included in phase one of a larger plan to redevelop the marina. The $2.4 million project proposes major renovations but has been stalled by a lengthy permit process.

Rather than face the possibility of losing the window for the permits already acquired for the boat launch, the port decided to proceed with that aspect of the overall project immediately.

According to Field, the bid packages from contractors will be due Aug. 29. A special session will follow shortly where a low bid may be approved. In that case, construction could begin by September, he said.
