Trees will highlight tonight’s meeting of the Langley City Council.

A committee that has been working on a proposed tree ordinance for the city will bring the council up to date. The committee has been working on the issue since September.

The intent of an ordinance would be to preserve and enhance the city’s environment by ensuring healthy trees, and the removal of those trees that may be dangerous. It would address proper use and expansion of greenbelts and open spaces, and the role of trees in protecting against erosion, especially in bluff areas.

In general, the ordinance would “support the property values and contribution to Langley’s natural beauty by enhancing the aesthetic character of the community through softening the built environment, easing transitions between different land uses, enhancing views and creating more tree-lined streets,” the committee’s purpose statement reads.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, at city hall. A council workshop will be at 4 p.m.
