“The Langley Police Department is getting closer to hiring a police officer to fill a position open since late last year.Langley Police Chief Bob Herzberg told the city council Wednesday that he received 27 requests for applications for the position after advertising the job statewide. Of the 27 applications sent out 10 were returned, he said. Eight of those who applied showed up for interviews. Two of the applicants flunked the department’s physical requirement. The remaining six passed written exams and are all eligible for the next round of the selection process. We’re getting closer, Herzberg said. One of those candidates has already attended Washington’s Police Academy. If that candidate were selected to fill Langley’s officer position, the city would save a considerable amount of money since the new officer could immediately start work. Herzberg estimated late last year that replacing an officer will cost the city in the neighborhood of $36,000 in lost work time, training, and overtime costs. “
