Langley installed and celebrated its first publicly-funded artwork Friday with the unveiling of two sculptures.

Both are on display for a year on a contract through the city’s Arts Commission. Frank Rose, chairman of the Langley Arts Commission, unveiled the sculptures at the Second Street plaza during a special Halloween ceremony. The sculptures were covered in white sheets, creating a ghostly appearance, while Mayor Fred McCarthy led the ceremony attended by several people in Halloween costumes.

Funding for the project came from the city’s implementation of a 1-percent-for-the-arts policy earlier this year. All capital projects will have 1 percent of the cost reserved for public art, which will be selected through an application process by members of the Langley Arts Commission. In the case of the sculptures, they are on display for $600 until November 2015.

“Sun Catcher” was made by Lloyd Whannell of Clinton, the other is a work of Sue Taves, named “Waves.”
