The change was made due to power conservation efforts that left the gym without heat earlier in the week.South Whidbey’s girls learned how the top basketball teams play on Friday and then came back home Saturday to put on an impressive performance in beating the Sultan Turks 61-31.At Lynden Christian on Friday, the Falcons knew they were entering the gymnasium of a perennial Class AA state power, as well as the defending North Cascades Conference champion. The Lyncs performed as advertised, even though they lost most of last year’s starters to graduation.Lynden Christian doubled South Whidbey’s first quarter output, 16-8, and went on to win 61-31.Lynden Christian was pretty balanced, and we were able to see the level of play we need to get to, said Falcon coach Nancy Ricketts. The Lyncs averaged about 15 points a quarter and played consistently well. They also made their free throws, scoring 14 from the charity line in the second half. They’re tough, Ricketts said. But we made some bad fouls at the wrong time. On offense, the Falcons were led by center Hilary Wick who scored 10 despite battling a 6-2 opponent all night long.The young Falcons, who have only two varsity seniors, seemed to learn from their experience at Lynden Christian. Against the weaker Sultan Turks on Saturday, the Falcons dispatched the visitors 63-44.The big difference came in the second quarter, which the Falcons dominated 19-6. We used our speed to push the ball upcourt, said Ricketts. With a comfortable 32-16 halftime lead, the coach was able to give all the varsity players time on the boards in the second half, and all but one player scored. Wick led the way with 16 points while Lindsey Binford and Jaci Gutzmer scored 8 apiece.The Falcons split their first two North Cascades Conference games and have another pair of league contests this week, starting tonight when Blaine visits South Whidbey.We’ve got two really big league games, Ricketts said. If we play to our potential we can improve our standing in league. Friday they travel to Lakewood. “
