“The South Whidbey Lions will host White Cane Days on May 5 and 6. Members of the club will be at several places of business on the Southend of the island, taking part in this worldwide event gathering funds to help individuals who cannot afford glasses or eye care. Used glasses may be turned in at the same time. The glasses are tested and sent all over the world. South Whidbey Lions have so far collected over 2,000 pairs. We also have arranged for more than 200 eye examinations and the medical services required, said Lion Richard McCloskey. We are asking you to help us to help others. Working together, we can help those in need. We will all profit.Since White Cane Days started in 1969, it has raised over $6 million to provide financial support for Lions sight programs, including the Northwest Lions Eye Bank and five Low Vision Clinics that serve needy children and adults with sight impairments. Also benefiting from White Cane support is the Lions Health Screening Unit, a mobile unit that travels to hundreds of communities each year providing children and adults with free health screenings for vision, hearing, glaucoma diabetes and blood pressure. More than 22,000 people were screened last year. The Northwest Lions Eye Bank is the third largest in the nation and has provided over 18,000 corneas for sight-restoring transplant surgeries.”
