Dave Westlake and John O’Hara of Redmond won the 5K and 10K, but got a little help from their friends at the third edition of the benefit running race. The two training partners showed up with their dogs, which set the pace for the two runners on their way to convincing victories Saturday.The race, which was held on trails at the South Whidbey Community Park, seemed to be fun for all 85 human runners. Westlake said it was especially so for his German shorthair, Cara. She takes it out really fast, he said after the race.Held as a fundraiser for the Maxwelton Salmon Adventure, the event raised almost $2,000 for salmon habitat restoration on South Whidbey. But on race morning, most of the runners were thinking more about chasing down the two guys with the dogs than they were about fish.In the 5K, South Whidbey High School sophomore Jasper Hein was the top local finisher, clocking a 19:38 on the course. He finished about 2 minutes behind Westlake. The top women’s finisher was South Whidbey graduate Jessie Enell.At 10 kilometers, 2000 Tri-the-Rock champion Peter Oakley was the fastest South Whidbey runner. No match for the dog-paced O’Hearn, Oakley still finished within two minutes of the lead runner. Following close behind were Tri-the-Rock placers Brandon Henry and Curt Gordon, and women’s winner Katherine Rogers in an impressive time of 43:32.Race organizer Dean Enell noted that dogs will not be allowed at next year’s race.The top pledge getter for the race was Ina Orme, who brought in $100 for the island’s salmon. “
