Both played in a heartbreaking 3-1 loss to Lynden Christian Saturday.Matt Johnson / staff photoA second-half comeback and a high shot count couldn’t give the Falcon boys soccer team enough lift Saturday as the team lost to the undefeated North Cascades Conference leader Lynden Christian Lyncs.Though both teams are playing at the same level as they did last year, the Lyncs seem to have taken away the edge the Falcons had in 2000, when they beat Lynden Christian three times on their way to the state championship game.The Lyncs downed the Falcons for the second time this year over the weekend, blowing the game open with two scores in the second half on their way to a 3-1 win.The loss drops the Falcons to 11-3 and to third place in the NCC, one game behind Mount Baker. While this is the team’s best record ever, both the Mountaineers and the Lyncs are having banner seasons and will be obstacles on South Whidbey’s road through the district playoffs.Falcon coach Mark Helpenstell said his boys played as well as the Lyncs Saturday and even outshot them. The Lynden Christian players were just a bit sharper than his own, as they were on March 30, the last meeting between the two teams.Hopefully we get another shot at them, Helpenstell said.In Saturday’s game, the Lyncs went up early in the first half and held a 1-0 lead into the opening minutes of the second half. Senior Falcon striker George Supang evened the score at 1-1 with an unassisted, 30-yard goal kick. But the Lyncs answered with two more goals against South Whidbey goalkeeper Mike Johnson – enough to put the game away.The Falcons play their final home game of the season Thursday against visiting Granite Falls. If the Falcons and Mount Baker both win their final games of the regular season, they will play a tie-breaking game before district playoffs begin.
