Herman Schoonover appeared in Island County Superior Court May 4 and the judge found probable cause existed to believe he committed the crime of assault in the second degree. The judge set Schoonover’s bail at $50,000.

Schoonover had been released from prison Aug. 12, 2021 and has been wanted on a Department of Corrections no-bail warrant since Aug. 31, 2021, according to the prosecution. In 2017, he was sentenced to just over five years in prison for five counts of possession of stolen firearms as well as burglary and possession of heroin.

In the recent case, law enforcement responded to the hospital ER to speak with a man being treated for a stab wound to his knee. The man said Schoonover, his roommate, stabbed him with a knife during an argument, the police report states. The man had a four-inch wound.

When contacted by police, Schoonover admitted to kicking his roommate in the chest but claimed the man stabbed himself in the knee, the report states.
