Man held on $150,000 bail for domestic assault

A Seattle man is accused of assaulting his girlfriend after bringing her to a house in Coupeville to recover from a prior assault, according to court documents.

Martin A. Harris, Jr., 26, appeared in Island County Superior Court April 16.

Judge Vickie Churchill found probable cause existed to believe Harris committed the crimes of assault in the second degree, unlawful imprisonment and interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.

Churchill ordered Harris held on $150,000 bail.

Deputies with the Island County Sheriff’s Office responded April 15 to a report of a woman screaming at a Coupeville home. A deputy knocked on the door and was met by a naked woman who had been severely beaten, the deputy’s report states.

The woman told the deputy that she had been in a relationship with Harris for months and that his ex-girlfriend had invited her to a barbecue in the Seattle area the prior weekend. Four or five women “jumped” her and she was later found unconscious and bruised by police.

Harris took her from the hospital to Coupeville to “relax and decompress” in a relative’s home after the assault, the report states. She told Harris several times that she wanted to pursue charges against the women, but Harris told her to “let Karma sort it out,” the deputy’s report states.

The woman said Harris attacked her when she was on the phone and told her mother that she planned on pursuing charges, the report states.

Harris repeatedly choked her and threw her to the ground, causing her to hit her head on a coffee table, the deputy wrote.

Harris yelled at the woman for bleeding all over the place and threw her into the shower, ripping her clothes off, the report states.

He prevented her from leaving the bathroom, according to the woman’s account.

The woman was able to jump out of the shower and go to the door when the deputy knocked.

The deputy noted that she had numerous bruises and scrapes on her face and body, a split lip and an injured wrist, the report states.

She reported that it was difficult to breath.

Harris told detectives that the woman had broken a wine glass and he cut it when he was cleaning it up, the report states.
