Man seriously injured in one-car crash Wednesday

A Bellingham man was seriously injured in a single car crash Wednesday afternoon on Cultus Bay Road on South Whidbey, the Washington State Patrol reported.

A 4-year-old passenger was transported to WhidbeyHealth Medical Center with minor injuries, according to South Whidbey Fire/EMS.

Steven Poolman, 24, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He was listed in critical condition in the ICU as of Thursday evening.

Poolman was driving a gray Volkswagen Passat when he left the roadway south of the intersection with French Road and hit a tree. The crash was reported just before 4 p.m.

The State Patrol reported that Poolman’s speed was the cause of the accident. He was wearing a seatbelt. The case is under investigation.

Cultus Bay Road was closed for about an hour from Glendale Road to French Road while law enforcement investigated the scene.
