Maxwelton parade canceled

One of Whidbey’s oldest traditions has been canceled, another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The annual Maxwelton Independence Day Parade and all of its accompanying activities have been canceled for the safety of the community and all potential attendees, organizers said.

Organizer Harriet Arnold said there will be a 2020 parade button that can be purchased at next year’s event.

Button collecting has been a popular feature of the yearly event, according to organizers.

The parade has historically drawn multiple participants, who enter to be a part of the proceedings at the last minute.

Classic games and activities have also been a unique feature of the event.

The parade was last cancelled during the World Wars.

This year would have been the 105th year for the Fourth of July Parade.
