“South Whidbey voters last spring inadvertently overtaxed themselves due to a miscalculation in levy figures submitted by the school district.The error was rectified Monday night when the school board followed the advice of budget director Rex Miller to roll back the levy already approved. The amount approved by voters April 25 was greater than allowable, Miller said. The error was pointed out by the office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Miller said we were over optimistic, when the levy amount was set. We wanted to push it as close as we could and we did.The board unanimously re-set the amount of the two-year excess levy approved by voters to $2,909,026, thereby bringing the total within the state limit on such local levies.As a result of the error, the school district budget will have $118,231 less revenue over the two years, but no impact on school programs is expected. Miller said budget figures can be adjusted to cover the loss. Voters approved an estimated levy rate of $1.54 per thousand, but that will go down a bit, Miller said.
