Monday holiday honors King

Whidbey Island schools and government offices will be closed Monday in recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

They will not attend school on Monday.Island County employees will have the day off, as will U.S. Postal Service employees and other government workers. Most businesses will remain open, including The South Whidbey Record office.Washington State Ferries reports that Monday will be a regular construction day at the Mukilteo ferry dock. Midday ferries from Clinton will go to Edmonds and a passenger-only ferry will serve Mukilteo.Gov. Gary Locke called for a day on, not a day off, on Monday. He is asking that citizens volunteer in their communities to honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.The governor’s effort was endorsed by King’s widow, Coretta Scott King, who wrote, The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all races and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others. “
