“This 1996 Volvo driven by Edward Babik hit a car head-on Saturday afternoon.Matt Johnson / staff photoA 16-year-old driver who apparently failed to yield while making a left-hand turn in Freeland on Saturday was injured along with two people in another car.According to the Washington State Patrol, Freeland resident Brandon Cobb turned his 1975 Volkswagen Beetle into the path of an oncoming car at about 2:28 p.m. while attempting to make a left turn from Highway 525 onto Bush Point Road. As he made the turn, his car was struck head-on by a 1996 Volvo station wagon driven by Edward Babik, 59, of Freeland.The State Patrol estimated Babik was driving southbound at about 50 mph at the time of the accident. In the car with Babik was his wife, Jeanne, 58. The impact of the crash sent Cobb’s Beetle rolling into the ditch. Rescue personnel from Fire District 3 removed all three people from their vehicles. They were transported to Whidbey General Hospital via ambulance for treatment. According to Whidbey General Hospital spokesperson Trish Rose, Edward Babik was not injured in the crash. His wife was treated then release Saturday afternoon. Cobb was admitted to the hospital for overnight observation.All three were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Both cars were total losses. “
