As the date approaches for the Board of Island County Commissioners to decide how they will handle their roadside herbicide spray program this year, a third South Whidbey community has decided it has had enough of chemical weed treatment.

Two weeks ago, the board of trustees of the Mutiny Sands Homeowner Association voted to have their Freeland-area community listed as “No Spray,” meaning that county road maintenance crews will not be allowed to spray any herbicides on any roads inside Mutiny Sands.

Mutiny Sands trustee Bill Frederick said last week that the listing is something the 70-home community clearly supported. Trustees approved the change unanimously.

“There wasn’t even a discussion,” he said.

Like South Whidbey’s other no-spray communities — Scatchet Head and a group of homeowners on Freeland Aveneue — Mutiny Sands residents will be expected to keep their road edges clear of weeds. They may do so using only manual methods, such as mowing, clipping and pulling. Individual homeowners may not use herbicides on the road edges.

On Monday, the Island County commissioners will approve funding for the 2002 road maintenance program. A large group of herbicide spray opponents is expected to be at the 9:30 a.m. meeting.
