“Advocacy Skills 101, a free 15-hour seminar, will be held June 22-24 in Oak Harbor, sponsored by Citizens Against Domestic and Sexual Abuse. The course is one of the first offerings of the new CADA Institute, the agency’s educational division. The institute will offer classes, workshops and conferences designed to enhance the community’s health and safety.Advocacy Skills 101 is an interactive seminar that can serve as professional development for human service workers or as an introduction to advocacy for those in other fields. The course is required for all new CADA volunteers and is recommended for counselors, health care professionals, Guardian ad Litems, student interns, or interested community members who interact with and wish to assist victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The public is welcome; counseling experience is not required.Topics include: the role of an advocate, victimology, empowerment, values clarification, confidentiality, communication skills and crisis intervention. The trainers, provided by the Washington State Office of Crime Victims Advocacy, are Mary Brown, Marlene Watkins Dewey, and Joan Renner.The seminar begins Friday, June 22 at 5 p.m. with a no-host dinner at Mitzel’s Restaurant, 33185 SR 20 in Oak Harbor, followed by training from 6 to 9 p.m. The seminar will continue on Saturday and Sunday, June 23 and 24, beginning each day at 9 a.m. at the Best Western Harbor Plaza 33175 SR 20.Registration for the free 15-hour training is required by June 20.
