Park district hosts design meeting
The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District will hold a public meeting to assess design concepts for a new pool and recreation facility.
The meeting is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 12 at the House
of Prayer, Highway 525 and Crawford Road.
District officials want input to help determine the components of an aquatic and recreation facility for South Whidbey citizens.
As a continuation of the district’s master plan, the district hired O.R.B. Architects of Renton to conduct a feasibility study to determine whether the preferred design provided by McLeod Reckord is the most suitable for the community.
‘Lattés for Life’ fundraiser planned
South Whidbey High School senior Laurel Johnson is having a fundraiser next week in Freeland to raise money for a local nonprofit organization called HopeFirst Foundation.
Called “Lattés for Life,” the benefit is Saturday, June 7. All the proceeds from the day’s sales at the 1504 Coffee Bar in Freeland, including all coffee and food, will be donated to HopeFirst, along with any tips and donations.
“HopeFirst Foundation is dedicated to transforming the lives of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, and fostering a sense of community, personal reflection and artistic discovery via traditional Zimbabwean music,” Johnson said.
Johnson took a trip to Zimbabwe last year with a group of friends and family and it completely changed her life.
“I am going to major in international studies next year at the University of Washington,” she said. “From there, I want to get my masters in public health and work for some kind of environmental health organization doing field work in Africa. I will most likely specialize in child healthcare.”

Parks district approves contract
The South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District board approved a contract for the drainage and irrigation project at the Community Park ballfields Wednesday.
Greenshield Systems was given a $437,000 contract to begin work on drainage and irrigation on the soccer fields at the sports complex on Langley Road, the upper soccer fields and two baseball diamonds.
Work begins on June 9 and is expected to be finished by
July 18.
Funding for the work is part of the park district’s $1.6 million ballot measure that was passed by voters on Feb. 19.
Work starts on Langley sidewalk
The city of Langley started construction on another sidewalk project earlier this week.
Larry Brown Construction will install a new water line, build a walkway on the east side of Anthes Avenue and repave Anthes between Second and Sixth streets. The work will continue until July 18.
