An Oak Harbor woman and her four children escaped from a fire that destroyed their home and possessions early Sunday morning, according to the Oak Harbor Fire Department.

Fire Chief Ray Merrill said the five occupants escaped safely through the back door of the mobile home, which is located on Northwest Crosby Avenue. The woman was alerted to the fire after hearing a crackling noise out the window and managed to evacuate her children quickly. The kids are ages three months to 14 years old, according to the fire department. The father was not at home at the time of the fire.

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family members at www.gofundme.com/f/family-in-need-after-home-got-on-fire. They are currently staying with relatives in Mount Vernon.

A home and vehicle next to the house fire also sustained damage. Those homeowners were displaced due to damage to the exterior of their home and are staying with relatives, according to Merrill.

The woman reported the fire at 1:40 a.m. and the first engine arrived in five minutes, Merrill said. The single-wide mobile home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. Firefighters started an “offensive fire attack” and extinguished most of the blaze within 10 minutes. They remained on scene for three hours to conduct overhaul operations and make sure the fire was out.

Oak Harbor Fire Department was assisted by North Whidbey Fire and Rescue and Navy Region Northwest. The cause of the fire has not been determined. Merrill was at the scene investigating Monday afternoon.
