Oak Harbor to host national high school sailing championship

This weekend, the country’s high school sailing champions will meet in Oak Harbor to race.

Seen best from F Dock at the Oak Harbor Marina or Flintstone Park, 14 teams will gather for the Interscholastic Sailing Association Baker Team Race National Championship. Dingies fling from the marina through downtown.

Families from all over the country will arrive on the island Friday as the race kicks off in the afternoon, with the final race on Sunday. Competitors race in two-boat teams against a couple of other schools at a time.

The sailing association splits the country into seven districts which rotate the championship location. Oak Harbor was chosen among venues in the Northwest region.

Sailors from Oak Harbor High School, Coupeville High School and South Whidbey High School practice together with Oak Harbor Youth Sailing coaches, representing their respective schools in district regattas.

While every high school on Whidbey has had teams competing up and down the I-5 corridor, the two representing the Northwest this year, having won their respective district championships, are Roosevelt and Olympia high schools.

The stakes are high, said Bill Weinsheimer of the Oak Harbor Youth Sailing board.

“It’s the best high school sailors in the country, and most of them will go on and sail collegiately,” he said. “Some of them may even go sail in the Olympics someday. It’s pretty amazing.”
