David S. Swanson

David Scott Swanson, 42, of Freeland, died suddenly on Nov. 11, 2001. He was born on July 6, 1959, to Gerald Lloyd and Bonita Swanson in Fargo, N.D.

David was known as the “hardwood floor finisher” and thought of his work as an art. He lived on Whidbey Island for 12 years. He will be so deeply missed by his family and many good friends. It was known that his favorite daily hobby was his guitar that entertained many of us.

He is survived by a sister, Terri Campbell, and her husband Andy; their two daughters, Crystal and Keasha Campbell, all of Whidbey Island; two brothers, Craig Swanson and Bryck Remy of Hoodsport. He will always be remembered and in the hearts of his two loving daughters, C.C. Swanson and Aerial Douglas Swanson, of The Dalles, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Bonita Swanson.

There will be a graveside service Saturday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. at Sunnyside Cemetery in Coupeville. All those who know Dave are invited to a potluck memorial at 3 p.m. Nov. 17 at the American Legion Hall on Highway 525 in Bayview.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions can be made to David’s surviving two young daughters.

Doris W. Johnson

Doris Wells Johnson, 77, died on Nov. 10, 2001 in Langley. She was born on April 9, 1924 in Sebring, Fla.

Doris possessed an enthusiasm for living and a sense of adventure. Following her graduation from Florida State College she met the love of her life, Col. Lars Johnson, an Army Air Corps pilot. Soon after their first blind date the couple married and moved to Alaska, where they spent many years working and traveling throughout the state.

Prior to moving to Langley, Doris and her husband spent seven years in Medford, Ore. She was an active church member of First United Methodist Church in both Alaska and Medford. She transferred her membership to Langley’s United Methodist Church.

Doris was involved in various church activities throughout the years. She tirelessly volunteered in Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and at numerous school events, and was a member of the Association of American University Women. She was an avid reader and an accomplished gardener.

Her friends recall her as the quintessential lady. She was as much at ease hosting an elegant tea party as she was hiking across the tundra. She and her family spent many glorious days camping and fishing in the Alaskan wilderness.

Doris fought a long and valiant battle against cancer. Doctors, nurses and technicians marveled at her positive attitude. She participated in several medical trials and counseled many others along that difficult path with just the right note of compassion and humor.

Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her father and mother, Arthur and Freda Wells; brothers Arthur and Wendell; and her beautiful daughter, Jennifer.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Lars Johnson; a son, Lars Johnson Jr.; and a daughter and son-in-law, Jonna and Martin Laster. She will be deeply missed by her sister, Gloria Broadfoot in Florida, her brother and sister-in-law, David and Helmi Wells in Spain, and her husband’s brothers and their families, Curtis Homme and Gordon Homme of Anchorage, Alaska. Her nieces and nephews thoroughly enjoyed her company.

Doris will always be remembered by her three grandchildren, David Trimble Johnson and Ian and Kate Laster. She will be deeply missed by Bob and Claudine Trimble, Karen Trimble and many, many friends whom she cherished over the years.

Doris Wells Johnson was a person of insight and compassion, strength and vitality.

A memorial service will be Saturday, Nov. 17 at 2 p.m. at Langley United Methodist Church.

Edna F. Fillmore

Edna Florence Fillmore, 91, of Clinton, died Nov. 12, 2001. She and her husband lived on Whidbey Island for the past two-and-a-half years.

Mrs. Fillmore was born in Stamford, Conn., on May 28, 1910. She was a superb woman who lived a life of industry and quiet virtue, a devoted and loving wife to her husband, companion and friend of over 70 years, Norman Fillmore Sr. She was also a supportive, nurturing and loving mother to their three children, Norman Fillmore Jr., of Austin, Texas, Margaret Somerville of Lake Stevens, Wash., and Judith Campbell of Clinton.

Being a wife and mother always came first with Edna, but she also managed to appear on the stage as an acclaimed singer and a dancer, as well as maintaining a career as an accountant and secretary. She was an active member in the Baptist Church of Stamford and the Southside Baptist Church of Brandon, Fla. Her husband, three children, 12 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and all others who knew her will miss her greatly.

Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m. at Floral Hills Chapel, 409 Filbert Road, Lynnwood.

Christine Kaufman

Christine E. Kaufman, 61, of Clinton died on Nov. 10, 2001 of cancer. She was born in West Seattle on Feb. 22, 1940.

The Northwest travel industry has lost one of their finest. She was the president of Manlove Travel in Seattle and was well-known in the travel industry through her position as Northwest President of the American Society of Travel Agents, her directorship of the Western Association of Travel Agents and her membership in SKAL, a travel and tourism organization. Her contributions to the travel industry will be a tough act to follow.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the South Whidbey Volunteer Firefighters Association, Post Office Box 162, Clinton 98236.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. at Visser Funeral Home in Langley. Interment will be in Bayview Cemetery.

Mundy Stevenson

A memorial service will be held for Mundy W. Stevenson, 102, of Mount Vernon on Friday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Masonic Lodge in Langley, where he was a member. He was also a member of the Langley Chapter of Order of Eastern Star.

Before retiring to Whidbey Island in 1962, Mr. Stevenson was an accountant in Seattle. His wife, Terone, preceded him in death.
