Lizianna Southward, Marie Artrip

Lizianna Southward

Lizianna Southward of Freeland died Nov. 27, 2001, at the age of 84.

An avid football fan and golfer, Southward and her husband, John, moved to Whidbey Island in 1974 after a two-day visit. The couple made Freeland their home and enjoyed every moment of their 27 years on the island.

Johnís years of service to the Marine Corps fostered Liziannaís love for traveling. After living in Japan, the couple continued traveling around the world and the United States for many years.

Lizianna is survived by her husband.

A memorial mass is scheduled at St. Hubert Catholic Church, Langley, Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 10:30 a.m. Donations to favored charities are requested in lieu of flowers.

Marie Artrip

Marie Artrip, 82, of Whidbey Island, passed away Nov. 24, 2001.

She was born Aug. 6, 1919, in Carr, Ky., to Sherwood and Dicie Sturgill. Marie met her husband, James, while she was working in a diner in Hindman, Ky.

It was love at first sight. They were married for 47 years. They had two daughters, Edith, known as Edie, and Cecelia, called Teo. The family moved from Kentucky to Washington in 1961. She dearly loved her husband, daughters and family, which she made first priority in her life. Even though she lived in Washington, she was always a Kentuckian at heart. The family eventually settled on Whidbey Island. In her later years, she enjoyed spending time at the Bayview Senior Center with her friends. Marie always looked forward with anticipation to her birthday parties, which were always held at the senior center. They will be missed by all who attended.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1987. She leaves two daughters, Edie Chelius and husband Rodney, and Teo Dance and husband John; three grandchildren, Michael, Christopher and wife Mysti, and Karl; and great-grandson Taylor; a brother, Owen, and wife Gladys; a sister, Ileen; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends. She will be lovingly missed by both her Washington and Kentucky families.

A funeral service will be at noonSaturday, Dec. 1, at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home, 11111 Aurora Ave. N., Seattle. The phone number is 800-755-1350.

A celebration of life will be hat 12:30 p.m. Tuesday Dec. 4, at the Bayview Senior Center, 14594 Highway 525 Langley.
