John Charles Arthur Nestor
John Charles Arthur Nestor passed peacefully away at Careage in Coupeville, on Feb. 6, 2002, at 5:30 a.m.
He is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy; three sons, John Noel, Darryll James and David Arthur and wife, Robin; six beloved grandchildren, Paul Nestor and wife Kristin, Bradley Nestor, Anna Rose Nestor, Daniel Nestor, Caitlin Nestor and Lucas; three great-grandchildren, the wonderful Madison, Riley and Jacob Nestor; a brother, Richard, and wife Anne; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Nestor was born in Colfax on a bright summer’s day Aug. 7, 1920, to loving parents Phyllis and John Harry Nestor. He attended school in Colfax, Seattle and Bremerton before joining the Marine Corps in the spring of 1940. He served with distinction in New Zealand and Guadalcanal through World War II until his honorable discharge as a staff sergeant in 1946.
On April 12, 1947, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Mary Shropshire. They were married for 55 years.
John worked in construction all his life and left his accurate mark all over Seattle and Spokane, in housing and commercial structures, as well as in the way he treated all those he worked with.
John was an ardent hunter, fisherman and golfer. When he was no longer able to continue these sports, he turned to his other passions, gardening and baseball. For years, he had worked on the design of his and his wife’s dream house, and in 1986, he and Dorothy moved to Whidbey Island to fulfill that dream. He grew his own geraniums from starts and shared them with many friends. His vegetable garden and fruit orchard produced a bounty that he shared with all.
During his last year, he was able to follow his beloved Mariners to the greatest season in the history of baseball. For more than12 years John served with distinction as a commissioner for Whidbey Island’s Freeland Water District. He was a devout member of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, Freeland.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 16 at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church, Freeland. Memorials may be made to St. Augustine’s and to the site of his never-to-be-missed bridge club, the Senior Center at Bayview. Arrangements are under the direction of Visser Funeral Home in Langley.
