“A couple of suspected rototiller thieves were undone when they drove into a ditch and got stuck not far from the scene of the crime, according to the Island County Sheriff’s Department.Freeland residents Anthony Lesczynski, 35, and Denise Buschko, 38, were both charged with first-degree theft in Island County Superior Court. They both pleaded not guilty March 30.Deputy Sean Warwick wrote that the owner of a South Whidbey house came home in time to witness the stolen pickup truck flee from the scene and drive straight into a ditch. The truck got stuck and the rototiller fell out the back.When Warwick got there, according to his report, he found Buschko hiding in a ditch. She seemed intoxicated and complained that her boyfriend, Lesczynski, had left her behind, Warwick wrote.Buschko told Warwick that the owner of the truck gave them permission to use it. Warwick contacted the owner, but the man said he had not given his permission and signed a complaint against the couple.The rototiller was taken from an unlocked garage on the property.First-degree theft carries a standard sentencing range of up to three months in jail. “
