A man accused of stealing a pickup truck from the Bayview Park and Ride Jan. 27 didn’t get very far, according to court documents.

The owner of a red, 1985 Toyota pickup reported to the Island County Sheriff’s Office that his truck disappeared from the lot, but his wife had seen it parked nearby at the Goose grocery store. He and his wife were headed to the ferry to try to find it.

A deputy also headed to the ferry dock and saw the truck parked at a Clinton gas station. He stopped a man who was headed back to the truck from the store, according to the deputy’s report.

The suspect, 38-year-old Everett resident Garza Mendivil, told the deputy that his friend “Ghost” let him use the truck.

The key in the ignition was for a Mazda vehicle and had been filed down, the report states.

The deputy searched Mendivil’s backpack, which allegedly contained two capped hypodermic needles and tools, court documents indicate. The deputy wrote that Mendivil was extremely polite, telling him that he had used methamphematine since he was 17 and had recently been in rehab.

Prosecutors charged Mendivil in Island County Superior Court Jan. 20 with taking a motor vehicle without permission in the second degree.

The judge released him on his personal recognizance.
