“Celean Breitenstein, a seventh grade student at Langley Middle School, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally-recognized artist by winning a local competition sponsored by the South Whidbey Lions Club.Breitenstein’s poster is among than 325,000 entries submitted worldwide in the 13th annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest.Peace around the world was the subject of Breitenstein’s poster, and judges said it best depicted this year’s contest theme, United in Peace.Jean Carl, Lions Club president, said she was impressed by the amount of effort exhibited by the Langley Middle School students. It’s obvious that these young people have strong ideas of what peace means to them. I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their vision with all of us.Breitenstein’s poster now advances to round two district competition in Surrey, B.C., where her entry will compete against entries from many other local contest winners. There are three further rounds of competition. Ultimately, one grand prize winner will be selected from 24 international finalists. The grand prize includes $2,500 in cash plus a free trip for the winner and two family members to Indianapolis for the awards ceremony at the Lions Clubs International Convention next July.
