“Just as the port commissioners feared, people are starting to use the wrong end of Dorothy Cleveland Trail which starts in Possession Beach Waterfront Park.The trail ends at the top of a hill, but some people keep right on marching through the woods until they come out on Lupine Lane, a county-owned road that is part of the Sandy Hook development.From the trail’s inception over two years ago, the port commissioners tried to discourage people from using the upper property as a trail access. The only correct way to enter the trail is from below, either in the park or from Franklin Road. The commissioners didn’t want people parking their cars in the Lupine Lane residential area.Port consultant Tom Roehl said he received one phone call from a Lupine Lane woman expressing concern about trail users parking in the neighborhood. However, according to Roehl, she too used the trail and didn’t want its access blocked off.Possession Park caretaker Art Pratt said that many trail users live in the Sandy Hook development. At least half park at the top, he said.Commissioner Jan Smith, who works for the Sheriff’s Department, said one possibility is to ask the county to place no parking signs in the area. Just go ahead and see if the county can post the road, she suggested.However, a less restrictive approach was adopted. The port will purchase signs for its property stating that parking is available at Possession Park, and posting no parking signs on its property. Another sign will be placed at the trail’s end to tell hikers to turn around. “
