“A 40-year-old Langley man who was facing kidnapping charges for assaulting his estranged wife and keeping her fom calling 911 recently pleaded to lesser charges in Island County Superior Court.On July 21, Frank Valencia pleaded guilty to fourth-degree assault and interfering with reporting domestic violence. His sentencing hearing is set for Aug. 4.As a condition of the plea bargain, the prosecution will recommend that Valencia be sentenced to 30 days in jail, two years of community service, plus a requirement that he enroll in a domestic abuser treatment program and drug and alcohol treatment.According to his wife’s petition for a protection order, Valencia got upset while they were discussing the terms of their divorce May 2. She wrote that Valencia threatened to kill her, then ripped the phone out of the wall when she tried to call 911.When she ran out of the house to get help, he picked her up and carried her back to the house. Their 8-year-old son got a bat to try to defend his mother. She managed to escape and run again, but Valencia again pushed her into the house.Valencia dragged her into the bathroom and locked her in and their two young children tried to free her. She finally got out and the police arrived.The victim told the court that Valencia has a long history of physical and emotional abuse towards her.Valencia was originally charged with second-degree kidnapping, which has a standard sentence range of over a year in prison. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charges as part of a plea bargain.”
