The League of Women Voters of South Whidbey Island will hold two election forums this month.

A forum for candidates running for Congress, county and state offices will be held tonight in the commons at South Whidbey High School. The forum starts at 6:30 p.m.

The forum will include candidates running for the District 2 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, positions in the 10th Legislative District in the state House and Senate, for District 1 and 2 on the Island County Board of Commissioners and Island County auditor.

Barbara Seitle, president of the League of Women Voters of Washington, will be the moderator. Questions for the candidates can be e-mailed to bseitle@whidbey.com.

The League of Women Voters of South Whidbey Island will also present an issues forum on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freeland. The issue forum starts at 7 p.m. and will cover state and local ballot measures.

Ballot measures to be discussed include Initiative 985, the “Transportation Measure”; I-1000, “Death With Dignity”; and I-1020, “Care Worker Certification.” Local proposals include the South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District’s new community recreation center, the Port of South Whidbey’s proposal to expand the Langley Marina, and the creation of a Whidbey Island public utilities district.

The issues forum will also be moderated by Seitle, and questions are welcome.

Questions can also be submitted by attendees at both forums.

The public is invited to attend a PUD/Puget Sound Energy Issues Forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters on Thursday.

There will be time set aside for the public to ask questions. Questions, however, will be limited to one minute and answers, to two minutes. The forum is from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9 at the Coupeville Recreation Hall in Coupeville. The hall is at 901 NW Alexander.

The Whidbey Island Eagles will also host a candidates forum this month.

The forum is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at the Eagles Aerie on Highway 525 near Freeland.

Candidates or their representatives are expected in the following races: governor, U.S. Congress, 10th District Legislature (Positions 1 and 2), Island County auditor and Island County commissioner (Districts 1 and 2).

The public is invited. Contact Dave Moulton at 331-5038 for more information.

The Clinton Progressive Association will present an election forum on two ballot issues that will affect Island County: the Port of South Whidbey’s proposition to rebuild the Langley Marina and the South Whidbey Parks & Recreation District proposal to build a community recreation center.

The forum is 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 at Clinton Community Hall. The association promises an in-depth look at these two propositions. Each discussion will begin with a presentation of the proposal, followed by presentations by persons for and against the issues.

The Port of South Whidbey offers “an informative discussion about the port’s proposition on the Nov. 4 ballot for a levy lift needed to fund the South Whidbey Harbor expansion and improvement project.” For more information, go to http://buildthewhidbeymarinanow.blogspot.com/.

South Whidbey Parks and Recreation District will have a measure on the November ballot for $15.2 million in bond capital to construct a multi-use community recreation, fitness and aquatic center.

If the measure passes, $15.2 million of 20-year general obligation bonds will be issued and property taxes will be raised to retire the debt.

Hot dogs will be served before the forum from 6 to 6:45 p.m., courtesy of the Clinton Chamber of Commerce.
