Port-a-potties provided by Port

“Porta-potties with a capital P will be available at the annual July 3 Celebrate America fireworks show at Freeland Park. That’s because the Port of South Whidbey decided Wednesday night to provide portable toilets for the fireworks and entertainment show, which annually attracts hundreds or thousands, depending upon the weather. At the urging of Dareld Chittim, assistant pastor at the Assembly of God Church, the Port commissioners decided to help out the cause by spending up to $500 to rent 10 Port-a-potties.Commissioners Jan Smith, Gene Sears and Jim Hawley wanted to help with the cost of the celebration, but were careful to spend their public money appropriately. Just writing a check to to help buy fireworks was ruled out, but since the port jointly operates Freeland Park with Island County, it was decided that helping meet the needs of the crowd was a good use of public funds.Speaking of port-a-potties, said Tom Roehl, port consultant, changing subjects. He said a second one is needed at the old Bush Point boat launch site as the summer season has arrived. Approval was quickly granted. The port maintains the Bush Point property purchased by the state Department of Fish and Wildlife. The department has budgeted money to build a new boat ramp at Bush Point, and Roehl said progress is being made toward that goal — but slowly. Bio-divers have already taken an underwater look at the site, checking for eelgrass and the like, while a wave expert is studying currents. At Langley, Commissioner Hawley reported that he and port accountant Chuck Edwards will be making a cost estimate this month for the proposed marina. Hawley reported that the old Langley Marina building is back in the ownership of Barney Hein, who reportedly has it on the market for about $350,000.”
